Origins

First Applebee's restaurant opened in 1980 by William Palmer and his wife in Atlanta in the year 1980 as T.J. Applebee's Rx for Edibles & Elixirs. With a unique and comfortable menu, the restaurant was a huge success.

The goal of the restaurateur was to establish a pub and restaurant type area where customers could enjoy good quality food at an affordable price. While it was simple, the idea was so effective that it began getting the attention of bigger food businesses such as W.R. Grace & Co. which later bought the idea in 1983 from William T. J. Palmer and William T. J. Palmer 1983.

Applebee’s Major Growth Spurt

While W.R.Grace &Co managed to bring more franchisees to the system, it only saw moderate profit and growth in 1987. Hence it was in the year 1988 that the firm was sold the concept of the restaurant and its concept to John Hamra and Abel Gustin.

Under the new management, Applebee's Worldwide Inc.'s profits soared by 500% to more than 24.21 million dollars by 1989. The rise was due mainly to the franchises the new owners acquired. In 2007, the company's revenue had risen to more than 1000 units.

Applebee's was purchased by IHOP corporation in November 2007. As a result, IHOP switched its brand name DineEquity. In April 2016, the company had more than 2000 table service establishments operating throughout The United States, Puerto Rico, and other countries. They were all owned as franchisees.
